I love the way the light is just barely catching on the snow covered pine trees at the top of Mount Jackson in this photo. The hike up Mount Jackson for sunset was one of my favorite adventures from the cold and snowy winter of 2026. My friend Dave Simms and I left the trailhead under cloudy skies but a few hours of hiking through the snow-buried forest brought us to the top of the southern Presidential Range and this stunning view of the alpenglow on the high peaks of Mounts Washington, Monroe, Eisenhower, and Pierce. The frosty trees, a favorite subject of mine in the winter, and the drifting snow that almost looked like waves rolling across the summit were the icing on the cake.
