A panoramic morning alpenglow photograph of snow-covered Mount Washington and Tuckerman Ravine glowing in shades of pink and red against a deep blue pre-dawn sky, with the broad glacial bowl of Tuckerman Ravine clearly visible on the mountain's face, dark evergreen trees silhouetted in the foreground, and a small structure visible on the distant summit.

Morning Alpenglow on Tuckerman Ravine and Mount Washington

I’m not sure whether I like this wider crop with the foreground scraggly pine trees or the tighter crop, Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines at Sunrise that focuses on the ravines better.

This panorama of sunrise alpenglow on the west facing ravines of Mount Washington was one of my most hard-won photos of the winter of 2024. I had been wanting to photograph a sunrise from the top of Wildcat D Peak for a few years and finally got a weather window late enough in the year that I wouldn’t have to leave my car at 1am. Even so, I put skis on snow at 5:30am from the parking lot of the Wildcat ski area and it took an hour and a half of high effort skinning to get to the top before the sunrise peaked over the eastern mountains. It was a dark, windy, and cold ascent and it was hard to tell as I was climbing what the sunrise would be like. My effort was rewarded with a beautiful display of alpenglow on Tuckerman and Huntington Ravines. Also visible is the large avalanche that had come down the center of Tuckerman Ravine the day prior.
